The European Commission has approved funding for the SEA-EU NEXT project, European University of the Sea’s (SEA-EU) new strategic initiative, with a total budget of 7.2 million euros for the period 2027-2029. The decision confirms the trust of European institutions in Alliance’s vision and achievements so far realized in collaboration of partner universities.
SEA-EU NEXT represents the first step towards establishing a fully integrated European university. The project will further strengthen joint governance, expand educational opportunities, promote development and staff mobility, as well as improve connectivity in the European campus.
Activities are aimed at strengthening governing structures through the SEA-EU Alliance, developing joint study programs at all levels, establishing academic recognition system that facilitate mobility and lifelong learning, as well as applying shared standards of sustainability, inclusion, and student engagement.
The European Commission's evaluation particularly highlighted strong institutional commitment of all partner universities, the establishment of a joint legal entity, developed and efficient governance model, and the digital ecosystem SEA-EU ONE. Special recognition was given to institutionalization of a comprehensive system for monitoring and recognizing mobility for all academic community members—students, teaching, administrative and technical staff (MCTS-Mobility Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).

In this project, the SEA-EU Alliance will further strengthen foundations of the European university model and open new opportunities for education, research, innovation and collaboration, confirming its commitment to building a more connected, inclusive and sustainable Europe.
