Minister of Culture and Media, Nina Obuljen Koržinek Ph.D. On April 22, opened the scientific conference "Colloquium Marulianum XXXIV: Marko Marulić and Croatian Renaissance", which took place in the University Gallery, as part of 34th Marulić Days, a scientific, literary and publishing program.
- This year has been declared the year of Marko Marulić, in order to honor the life and work of this giant of Croatian culture, intellectual, European and cosmopolitan, one of those who undoubtedly put Croatian culture on the map of Europe during his time, along with the greatest people of that era - Minister Obuljen Koržinek pointed out, referring to the role of Marulianum, the association that gathers researchers, scientists, intellectuals, and admirers of Marko Marulić, while researching and presenting his oeuvre.
Prof. Marko Trogrlić Ph.D., president of Split Literary Circle, referred to several important discoveries presented to the public during Marulić's Days: first of all, previously unknown Marulić’ texts: letters in Latin and Italian (M. Milošević, 1991), Latin Biography of St. Jerome (D. Novaković, 1994), Glasgow verses (D. Novaković, 1997), commentaries on Catullus' poems in the Trogir Petronius codex (B. Lučin, 2005), and also several new readings and interpretations of his work.
- We are proud that in a sky full of stars, some of them are ours, among them Marko Marulić - after St. Jerome's second most important figure in Dalmatia! He will also be studied - this is what these Marulić Days are dedicated to: let them be (in the words of Mirko Tomasović) ad maiorem gloriam Marci Marula! - Professor Trogrlić declared.
On the occasion of Marulić’s Days, the University Gallery hosted an exhibition of eminent Croatian artists inspired by Marulić's works.
That same day, in the evening, at University Library, the first English translation of Marulić's Davidiad was presented, as well as commemorative publications Marulus tuus and Split - Marulianum Literary Circle’s catalog, as well as exhibition "Marko Marulić, Split’s poet and European Humanist" was opened in Department of Special Collections.
First English translation of Marulić's Davidiad was presented by Neven Jovanović from Zagreb Faculty of Humanities, translator Edward Mulholland and Jeroen De Keyser, from LYSA publishers, Gent.
The book is divided into two parts. The first one includes a brief account of Marulić's life and work, then structure, content and allegorical interpretation of Davidiad are described, and finally, previous editions, arrangement and translation are listed. The second part presents original text in Latin and its translation in English (side by side).
The program at University of Split was coordinated and event moderated by Helena Trze Jakelić, head of University Gallery.
